Spring Maintenance Checklist for Stone Patios and Walkways
Jonathan Perrette
If your patio looks a little rough right now, you’re not imagining it. Ottawa winters aren’t easy on stone. Between freeze-thaw cycles, snow clearing, and everything that gets dragged across the surface over a few months, it adds up.
Even well-installed patios will show some signs of wear by the time the snow melts. That doesn’t mean something went wrong, it just means your outdoor space has been through a full season of Canadian winter conditions.
Think of this as more of a reset than a repair process. A little time now can help prevent bigger fixes later in the season.
Here’s where to start.
1. Take a Walk and Actually Look At It
Before you grab a broom or hose, just walk the space.
You’re looking for anything that feels off more than anything that looks perfect. A stone that rocks slightly under your foot. A low spot where water might sit. Gaps that weren’t there last year.
Winter tends to shift things around a bit. That’s expected. You just want to catch anything that’s turned into a bigger issue.
It also helps to check things at different times of day. Shadows can make uneven spots more noticeable, especially early in the morning or later in the evening.
2. Clear Off What Winter Left Behind
There’s usually more sitting on the surface than you think. Leaves, grit, leftover sand, bits of debris that settled in over the season.
A good sweep goes a long way here. Take your time with the edges and joints, since that’s where most of it collects.
If you’re seeing green patches starting to show up, that’s usually the beginning of moss or algae. Easier to deal with now than later.
If the buildup has been sitting for a while, you may need to go over certain areas more than once. Getting everything cleared properly makes the next steps much more effective.
3. Give It a Proper Clean
This is the part where things start to look better fast.
You don’t need anything complicated. Water, a stone-safe cleaner if needed, and a stiff brush will handle most of it. You’re just lifting off the layer that’s built up over the winter.
Pressure washers can help, but they can also do more harm than good if you go too aggressively. Keep the pressure reasonable and avoid blasting out the joints.
If you’re unsure, test a small area first before committing to the whole surface. It’s a simple way to avoid unintended damage.

4. Fix Anything That Moved
If something felt uneven earlier, it’s worth fixing now.
Most of the time, it’s just a matter of lifting the stone, adding or adjusting the base underneath, and setting it back down properly. It doesn’t take long, and it makes a big difference in how the space feels when you walk on it.
Ignoring it usually just makes it worse over time.
Even small shifts can lead to larger issues if left alone, especially once the ground starts to settle again through the spring and summer.
5. Top Up the Joints
If the joints between stones look a little empty, that’s normal after winter.
Sweeping in fresh jointing material (like polymeric sand) helps lock everything back in place. It also keeps weeds from taking over once the weather warms up.
It’s one of those small steps that make the whole surface feel solid again.
Take your time with this step. Properly filled joints not only improve stability, but they also help maintain the overall look of the patio or walkway.
6. Pay Attention After the First Big Rain
You won’t always spot drainage issues right away.
After a decent rainfall, take another look. If water is sitting in certain spots or running in the wrong direction, that’s something to deal with sooner rather than later.
Water is usually what causes the bigger problems over time.
If you notice pooling, it’s often a sign that grading or levelling needs to be adjusted slightly. Catching it early can save you from more involved repairs later.
7. Decide If It Needs Sealing
Not every patio needs to be sealed, and not every homeowner wants to deal with it.
But if you’ve had issues with staining or just want to make maintenance easier moving forward, it’s worth considering. Just make sure everything is clean and fully dry before you go that route.
Sealing can also enhance the colour of certain stones, which is something some homeowners look for when refreshing their space for the season.
8. Think About What You Want This Space to Be This Year
Spring maintenance is also when people start noticing what they’d change.
Maybe it’s a small extension. Maybe it’s reworking an area that never quite felt right. Or maybe it’s just cleaning it up and leaving it as is.
Either way, this is usually when those ideas come up.
It’s also a good time to think about how you actually use the space. Small adjustments now can make it more functional throughout the summer.
A Quick Reset Goes a Long Way
Stone patios and walkways are built to last, but they do need a bit of attention after winter.
Nothing here is complicated, and most of it can be done in an afternoon. The difference, though, is noticeable right away.
Once everything is cleaned up and levelled, the space tends to feel completely different. It’s one of the simplest ways to refresh your outdoor area without a full renovation.
